MY ODE TO SOCIAL NETWORKING

A good idea to bring people together
Nothing to hinder, not distance, not weather
Not time, not location, not busy agendas
Keep us from the messages our buddies send us

But there is a less happy side to it all
It's not truly private, it's really quite small
For your friends are my friends
And my friends are your friends,
And if you declare it,
Then OUR friends can share it.

Gossip or no, you may not have meant it,
But don't think that some imp won't copy and send it.
Your name is there, time-stamped, hour and day,
So you can't lie, or take back the words that you say.

Someone will surely ask if it was true.
Don't end up with network egg all over you.
Perhaps it's your aim to hurt or offend,
But you must know moves like that have a sad end.

Say one thing to this friend- and that to another,
Be known as a liar to sisters and brothers.
There's TMI that would make a hooker blush.
Your business is out 'cause you're talking too much.

Your face is right there
You can say it ain't you.
But you tell on yourself by the things that you do.
It's okay to share, but not everything's good.
When you signed on to this stuff, did you think you would:
Act like an idiot
Forget the truth
Lose your dignity
Be so uncouth
Embellish about the goings on in your life
Get caught in gossip
Help stir up strife
Forget how to spell
Forget how to speak
Set records with all of the secrets you leak?

Delete, or hide, or simply ignore
Being rude was never so much fun before!
Why on earth do you want to be a friend now?
It's the person you never liked much anyhow
And they know now because of the words that they read
Confirmation that you are two- faced indeed

Perhaps you thought that if you post it first
You could cover yourself,
And if worse came to worst
There would be enough people to be on your side
Strangers you call friends who cover your hide

But discerning minds, hell, little kids too
Know the difference between fairy tales, white lies, and truth
You shun folk in public, but every day
You write on the walls of the people you hate
Looking for information to use
Searching for something to mock and amuse
Looking for anyone who'll say what you did
Was good, great, or wonderful- and then you bid
Them good night until you log on the next day
To see whose good name can be twitted away...
