THURSDAY THOUGHTS: POETRY PROMPT—INSECURITY

Society says you’re "it"
Propriety says, agree
Others have sampled what you own
(I've long been out of the running zone)
Yet, you’re racing; chasing me
Anxiety makes you fear
Sobriety won’t last long
You wonder why what’s yours
Is often not where it belongs

An extra’s always poised backstage
A spare is always on the lot
Temporary shuns the stress
That permanence has got

One always knows what one deals with
But, keeps hoping it will change
One wants to think one's special
But some things are just plain strange

The more you try, and buy, and love
The less you’ll be the sole ace of
What you think you deserve
So stop
Wait
Loosen the restraint
Stop coddling mediocrity
Take what's best out of reserve

Stop trying to fix others
Sure...if they would just comply
Be who we want, then we’d
Be much less terrified
We’d have much less disappointment
How happy we would be!
No more uncommitted Rolling Stones
No insecurity

For them, though, it’s misery
To not be who they are
No wonder they stray often
And cover every scar
Frustration comes when we reject the truth
And let them break
Our faith in our discernment
And trust in choices that we make
