There was a fatal train crash in Taiwan
An earthquake in Greece
Mudslides in Indonesia and Timor-Leste
A toxic wastewater leak in Florida that forced hundreds of evacuations
A shameful report that 443 migrant children still haven't been reunited with their parents
A confirmed case of the South African coronavirus variant in Brazil, where 4000 deaths were recorded in one day.
There’s so much going on that makes you feel positively helpless. So much pain and anguish; so much tragic news and loss. It would stand to reason that no one would be committed to making things worse; that if you can help, fix, share, solve, improve, lighten, correct... just invest in making a thing brighter or easier—whether for one person or many people—you would.
We see so much heartache every day. Shootings, suicides, fires, bombings, carjacking, accidents...It’s like people have been pushed to the edge. At the same time we see greed, selfishness, apathy, favoritism, corruption, and a commitment to injustice practiced by those trusted to lead, and oversee and regulate resources. Social media sites have turned into obituaries.
Now, more than ever, good has to be found, beauty sought, peace preserved, ear and eye gates protected. You can’t totally check out, but be kind to yourself. Know when you’ve had enough, listen to yourself, acknowledge the triggers, rest, unplug, recharge. Whatever self care looks like for you, commit to it. Keep yourself strong. You can care and be aware without allowing yourself to be overwhelmed. Brighten the corner where you are. It is enough, and does make a difference.
