Dad said he was home on leave from a Naval tour, and said, “I’m gonna marry that li’l school teacher…Your Mama wasn’t just pretty. She was smart.”
It’s strange, but mourning has given way to studying them; seeing them as ordinary people who had strengths, weaknesses, feelings, hopes, dreams, plans…
They weren’t perfect, but they were the perfect parents for me. Dad said my grandmother Rose admonished him early on: “A child needs a mother AND a father”.
I am who I am because of these two ambitious, cool kids from Louisiana. I can’t call or visit them anymore, but they’re still talking.
The other day I heard his voice, “You got a half a tank of gas. With this war, maybe you better go fill up.” Then yesterday, her voice. “You don’t need to order anything . You’ve got food right in the freezer that you can cook.”
And today: “What are you saving those sweet potatoes for? Why don’t you make a pie?”
They both baked wonderful pies.🙂
Happy 63rd Anniversary, you two.❤️
