QUARANTINE LIFE: POETRY PROMPT

GASLIGHTING

You didn’t see what you saw
You don’t know what you know
What you heard, you don’t understand
So please, don’t dare say so

You shouldn’t feel what you felt
Don’t dare think what you thought
‪The words you read aren’t what was said
Your grief is all for naught

Murder?
No!
Misunderstandings, brought upon themselves!
Some were even suicides
As far as we can tell
If only they’d been docile
If they’d just obeyed the law‬
You never would have seen
The countless accidents you saw

Racism?
It can’t be so!
It’s just coincidence
Unarmed people are frightening!
Their presence is intense!
They’re especially menacing
For centuries, we’ve learned
While walking, jogging, sleeping
Even when their backs are turned

Bigotry?
Don’t be silly!
We don’t know what you mean!
We think you’re just upset
By all the images you’ve seen
Just calm down, we’ll investigate
The way we always do
And come back with the same answers
That won’t satisfy you

Injustice?
Really?
That’s absurd!
Surely, you know by now
We live in two Americas
So there’s no way, no how
That we’ll concede your eyes, and thoughts, and ears
Told you the truth
Gaslighting works better for us
Like praying works for you
