Once again, I’m grateful for the artists and music to which my parents exposed us, and the varying tastes and genres they enjoyed, that informed my own choices.
I remember, each time she’d grace our television screen, via one variety program, or another. She was always graceful, classy, and sang so effortlessly. There were no visual distractions, no autotune, no lip syncing, just a beautiful, unique voice that didn’t fit into any boxes, mimic any other sound, or ascribe to imposed categories. Every word was clear, and every note exquisite—-and she stood right where she was—poised—and rarely ventured from her mark. There was no need for anything extra. Her regal presence and voice were enough.
These days, via social media, we’re also enjoying her wonderful, quick wit, and sense of humor.
