TUESDAY THOUGHTS: TELEVISION

“You cannot, ever, watch someone treat everyone terribly, and think that, that doesn’t mean they’ll do the same thing to you, under the right conditions. You know what I mean? And I should be clear, here—I’m not talking ‘bout someone who has a bad day; someone who’s in a bad way at the moment, we’re all human; people have bad days. I’m talking about someone who, by and large, treats people terribly, but is nice to you. It’s only for right now. As soon as you’re in the position the other people are in, they’ll treat you the same way— and if you don’t think so, you’re a fool…

You can have all the money in the world; you can have all the power in the world, but a lot of people conflate fear with respect, and they’re not the same thing, you know…You can be afraid of what someone could do to you with all of their money. It doesn’t mean you respect them. You can be afraid of what someone can do to you with all of their power, it doesn’t mean that you respect them, and you know it, because as soon as the money is gone, the respect is gone. As soon as the power is gone, the respect is gone…

There are plenty of people I’ve known, growing up in my life—men that I looked up to, who did not have any money, and they did not have any more power, than enough to control themselves, but I respected them because of how they treated people; how they carried themselves. Respect is the one thing— one of many—that cannot be bought, and can’t be forced.” ~Josh Johnson
