I watched the livestream of The University of Southern Mississippi’s commencement with pride and joy. It was fun cheering for total strangers, while waiting to hear my loved one’s name called. It was also encouraging to see so many young Black men and women, pursuing higher education, and not being fooled by suggestions that it’s no longer relevant, necessary, or financially wise.
I can almost hear my Dad saying, “Get that piece of paper. You need that piece of paper. It says you have potential.”
There are times I wish my parents were still here, but I’m grateful for the foundation they laid. They would have been so proud. I can imagine my late Uncle Woody, and Aunts Lillian and Gladys would have been along, on the caravan to Hattiesburg, to celebrate, him, too.
Congratulations, and best wishes to my great nephew, educator, coach, and now Master of Science graduate, Marcus Alan Roberts, and kudos to the village that’s always encouraged him to aim high.
