THE CABINET
Will there be a conscience among them?
What attributes will they all bring?
When challenged to lift integrity’s song
Will they know what lyrics to sing?
Will they all have hearts that are darkened
Can truth be found within their ranks?
Will honesty ever be welcomed?
For what madness will they all give thanks?
Are they all so caught up in victory
That they don’t see themselves as they ought?
Do they not see their likeness in History
Or remember, their kind comes to naught
Or that Vengeance has a righteous owner
And Justice, though slow, always wins
And each time evil boasted a foothold
Goodness triumphed again, and again?
Are they all somewhere mocking the gracious?
Do they not see the wrath they have spawned
That eclipses their joy, and is poised to
Redeem every right that was pawned
To install them in seats of power
And debase every sacred space
Is there no one among them who’s worried
That soon they will all run out of grace?
There will always be one who will tire
Of the burden that wrongdoing brings
Who’ll not wish to be known as a liar
Or complicit in everything
One who’s trusted, will be the redeemer
And though tarnished, will fashion the plan
To restore some semblance of order
And expose every treasonous man
But for now, there’s pride and delusion
Giddy, anxious need to control
A love of division; confusion
Disappointment has taken its toll
Fear joins anticipation
Of who the new minions will be
That carry out mass humiliation
To maintain their supremacy
