As a diehard fan of The Richard Smallwood Singers, it meant so much when Lisa thoughtfully phoned to wish me well, and welcome me into her musical family.
When her illness didn't allow her to sing, I traveled with the Smallwood singers on my first few pre-9/11 trips, to Atlanta, Nashville, and Indianapolis, holding airline tickets bearing her name. "Remember, you're me now! You betta sing!", she joked. Then she got serious and said, "You're going to love it. Do your best. Never fall for the hype, and keep God first."
Then she joked again, "You're probably not as crazy as me, but I know you're going to have fun."
She was right. I had a ball.
I’ll never forget the graciousness of Lisa Evangeline Burroughs Allen. 1960-2011
