It’s not enough to just respect a leadership position or title. I want to be able to genuinely respect the person occupying or holding it. I want to believe they deserve and have earned it. I don’t want to be embarrassed, repulsed, perplexed, or terrified by them. I need the person in charge to be qualified—and it matters greatly who, or what qualifies them. They need not be perfect—but honest, competent, mature, sober, law-abiding, coherent, fair, intelligent, and have integrity. I don’t want a leader who’s corrupt, or a joke. I don’t want to have to make excuses for them, or lie to, or delude myself about them. My support of them shouldn’t raise questions about my own sanity, scruples, or IQ.
Maybe that’s asking too much.
