QUARANTINE LIFE: POETRY PROMPT---INSECURITY

INSECURITY

Insecurity is sweltering

Like a day without a breeze

Makes something fun seem hardly worth it

Dulls what could be done with ease

Insecurity’s a spirit

That’s specifically bred

To hinder the harmonious

And sow distrust instead

Insecurity's exhausting

It's so hard to keep inside

It’s the cause at every scene

Where their unfounded fears collide

It swiftly elevates their pressure

Widens their suspicious eyes

Makes the smart ask stupid questions

Takes emotions for a ride

Insecurity is baffling

Drains the color from their face

Gets them marking folk like chattel

In every crowded, public place

Every spot's their territory

Including where you sit, or stand

Could it be that you're a hindrance

To the attention they demand?

Insecurity is funny

Makes could-be-friends, enemies

Turns a stroll into a wind sprint

Makes them see stuff you don't see;

Always wondering, what's your angle

When you show up where they are

With equal access to the party

Where they're the self-appointed star

Yet, they sidle up so rudely

Interrupt your conversation

Disparage what you do, so coldly

Without an ounce of provocation

All the blocking, and the side eyes

Snide remarks; nervous laughter

It's not a secret what they're after

If you'd just go, they'd be alright

Insecurity's so silly

And it's proof-- stuff ain't locked down

Lets you know what's on the table;

Where the spare keys can be found

It's not even their possession

They don't have an ounce of power

So, why are you intimidated

By their faces, tense and sour?

Insecurity's deceiving

Thinks it can seal impending doom

Wanna see that joker reeling?

Take a seat

Stay in the room.

Cross your legs; sip on your water

Chat with those who make you smile

Let the paranoid keep staring

You just plan to stay a while

Don't you dare leave

Rest right there, see?

They'll eventually get tired;

Check a mirror; see the issues

Are the thoughts their angst inspired

Keeping tabs is time consuming.

Making everyone a foe

And everything a competition

Destroys the real joy they could know

It’s not your job to reassure them

Stop playing small, and dumbing down

They’d just fixate on another

Even if you weren’t around.

Insecurity’s their issue

Don’t crowd your plate making it yours

Don’t preoccupy yourself

With what the wise know to ignore
