With every tragedy, you preach, “Stop the violence!”
But yesterday, warnings were far between, and few
What can you say to prick their hearts, and end the nonsense?
Everything they hold dear, stems from watching you.
You’re safe now; away from your beginnings
No longer moving in the circles you once knew
You left a script that taught them losing equals winning
Today, they glorify the stuff you used to do
They adopted every mediocre action
They embraced your style, your speech, your values, too
Who they are, is a result of your example
You bear responsibility for what they do
Grace allowed you to grow old; do you see now
How history informs and shapes our awful state?
We celebrate, and emulate what once would shame us
With each young life lost, we wonder if it’s too late
To be the proud, whose ancestors survived the waters
Unafraid to teach, to guide, correct, and lead
Snatch from the jaws of death our precious sons and daughters
Be the examples they so desperately need.
