Generation after generation
We fail to heed the words of the wise
We don't consider how they became so
How they're sure of the truth of what they know
Their regret lives in their yesterdays
They've learned; have chosen better ways
They've already failed at what we praise
In different places, spaces, and times
Generation after generation
We scoff at the words of the wise
We think they're old and don't know better
We dismiss warnings altogether
Think what we do is somehow novel
Unique, revolutionary, and unheard of
Until for empathy, we grovel
Because we believed lies
