Back in 2003, I asked Maurette Brown Clark if she would sing at Mommy’s homegoing service. (Those choices matter when you’re grieving. Her tone and sincerity made me a fan even before Vision was formed. Dad was a big fan, too. His radio lived on WYCB and Heaven 1580, and he’d make sure I knew when her songs were being played.)
She didn’t hesitate to bless us.
“Do It Today” is still my favorite. She even tailored it for Mommy; played and sang, “See, education’s fine—I’m sure Ms. Williams would agree— but tell me what will it gain you in eternity?”
I still smile about that.
I like this photo that was taken at the homegoing service of DMV radio legend, and friend, Marsha Sumner. It captures how I appreciate Maurette’s gift; the impact of anointing as opposed to mere entertainment; and reminds me how comforted I was at Mommy’s service.
I think every singer needs another singer—someone who can minister to you.
