Know the company you're keeping
Even if it's very brief
Check your feelings when it's over--
Distress, contentment, or relief?
Distress means there's some fear left over
There's some power to retract
Contentment indicates you've grown
You've no desire to go back
Relief just might turn into laughter
Things weren't as bad as you perceived
Either way, what follows first
Is to prioritize your needs
If you don't want to, then don't do it
It will never turn out best
Think it through before consenting
Conserve the time that you invest
If you don't like it, don't be gracious
It's always hard to fake applause
Believe the first time you're shown crazy
Every whim is not a cause
Read the rooms you enter
Always test the temperature
Notice the facial expressions
Asking, "Who invited her?"
You can pinpoint who's been talking
They can't look you in the eye
Can't be sure what they've been told
Is truth, opinion, or a lie
They're uncomfortable and thinking
Of conclusions they have drawn
And their own vile contributions
To the hot seat you were on
They don't know just how to take you
How are you able to smile?
Didn't all they did and said
Leave you disabled for a while?
Care very little of what "They" think
See everything for what it is
What ought to be, is often toxic
Ignorance may not be bliss
Make a conscious effort
To preserve your precious peace
Choices are never elusive
Some things you toss
Some things you keep
