QUARANTINE LIFE: POETRY PROMPT: RACISM IS TAUGHT

Who were those mothers screaming at Ruby?
Where are they now?
What could they have possibly feared about Ruby?
Reviled her anyhow

Who were those mothers glaring at Ruby?
Why such alarm?
Notice those mothers shouting at Ruby
Babies in their arms

Hearing their mothers cursing at Ruby
Did they know why?
Why were their mothers angry with Ruby?
She was just a child

They only screamed ‘cause their mothers were screaming
Lived what they learned
Ruby personified their greatest fear:
Had the tables turned?

What did those mothers, yelling at Ruby, teach their children then?
That Ruby’s heart, mind, and soul had no value,
Rights, nor innocence

Hatred was sown while they leered at poor Ruby
But she didn’t know
She thought it was a parade they were throwing
Tears never flowed

Those kids, whose mothers were screaming at Ruby, grew up
They’re parents now
The whole world can see how they treated poor Ruby
Every February, they're confronted with Ruby
Every night in their dreams they’re reminded of Ruby

Are the lies they believed about little Ruby;
The prejudiced seed sown to scar little Ruby;
The ignorant creed marking people like Ruby
The dastardly deed to keep out little Ruby
(That didn’t succeed, or stop little Ruby)
Why they’re still screaming now?
