The pandemic proved (to me, anyway), that singing isn’t something that you just hop up and do. It’s a muscle that needs flexing; a joint that needs lubrication; an engine that needs to be revved up. The threat of rust and frogs, as a result of underuse, is real! Studio microphones are merciless and don’t lie, so you can’t get away with anything …lol
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a recording studio. It’s a happy place that I can occupy all day. Stacking vocals is one of my all time favorite things to do. Omega Studios in Rockville, Maryland, was the site of a lovely reunion with several members of my Vision family. Erica Campbell reached out to Richard about covering “I Love The Lord”, and he reached out: “ Hey, Baby. Can you come to the studio?”
It was past time to test my bravery, and take a drive. I missed singing.
You can appreciate and sing a song for years, only to find, you’ve missed some fine details. You’ve been allowed to improvise and take liberties—as long as the lyrics were right, and the chords fit.
For this session, Richard wanted us to be more precise. How we’d “always sung it”, had been fine with him, but this time, he wanted us to be true to what he’d written so many years ago.
It was nostalgic, inspiring, fun—and work! His bionic ears didn’t miss a thing, but it was worth every minute to see him in his element, and be instructed by him, once again…and, I should have known he’d make me sing alto and soprano…lol
“Wait…What song did you say this was?”
