QUARANTINE LIFE: ART SHARE

So... The plan was to revive an old assignment I used to give to my students and use only the colors I had left— blues, greens, and browns.

Then I decided the figures wouldn’t be faceless, and I bought new paint. That didn’t go well. The browns didn’t like each other.

The thought of throwing away paint didn’t sit well. I figured maybe I shouldn’t have mixed two different brands. Neither was old. The newer paint just did what acrylic does when water is added. The board absorbed the water— and in this case— the pigment, too. Water revived the color, but it dried in the most ashy way. It was weird. In order to get the same brightness, and not surrender to frustration and throw away the painting, I thought, “what about blue faces?”

After a series of changes, and the original paint running low, I settled, and took it off of the easel to deter myself from adding or subtracting one more thing.

I started a new piece with the new paint alone, just to see what would happen. I used much less water this time—just to clean the brushes. It dried opaque, and very quickly— so dry that I could cover spaces with colored pencil to brighten them.

I like it...Something said, “Now, leave it alone.”
