Watching the gentleman remove Queen Elizabeth’s crown from atop her casket, was striking. All of the grandeur and ceremony was, too. It was quite a celebration. The only consolation for me was that she’d experienced comparable celebratory events while she lived. Yesterday’s spectacle was definitely for the living.
So many thoughts ran through my mind as I watched.
1. Great or small, grand or humble, when you leave this earth, you really can’t take it with you. My dad used to say he’d never seen a U-Haul following a hearse to a cemetery.
2. The strength of your relationships need not be scrutinized by others.
3. There should never be an expectation that you will do a thing exactly like someone else did. You’re not them.
4. No matter how dutiful or loyal you’ve been to one person, another person is under no obligation to retain your services.
5. You can bring more attention to a person by slighting them than by treating them with respect. Is that what an opportunist really wants? Sympathy for their rivals?
6. Those who truly serve, and serve well— who do the real work— will always stand out.
7. Some people don’t want a leader. They want someone they can control.
8. Your position will not go unfilled for long, no matter how good you were at your job.
9. There’s no lack. Resources are available. It’s how they’re used and distributed that counts.
10. Be sure you know what you’re asking for. Mind how you envy others. Once in that position for which you jockeyed and waited, will it be all that you imagined?
11. If it’s all that someone has ever known, it’s quite normal to them.
12. Keep on living. There’s something to be said for longevity and quality.
