Concerts. Rallies. Sporting Events. Protests. Funerals. Parties. Everywhere people are gathering. Over the years, I’ve been in my fair share of crowds. Today, I can’t say that I miss them, or want to run toward them. I'm relieved when I see social media posts of events, and the dates are prior to 2020. Crowds are for Wayback Wednesdays, Throwback Thursdays, and Flashback Fridays. When they’re current, they inspire concern and dread.
The pandemic is not over. You really have to say that to some people. You have to remind them as they tire of it, behave irresponsibly, flaunt recommendations (and seek to include YOU in THEIR plans). People are antsy, anxious, bored, and discontent. Economics drive some. Emotions drive others. Notice how everything some people say about their activities, comes with a defensive disclaimer, as if somewhere deep inside, they know they’re not being smart. Notice how they preface their plans with how “safe” they’re being as if they want approval. Notice how they brag, bully, attempt to shame, and imply how silly and sheepish others are for acknowledging that this virus is clearly no respecter of persons. Even the careless don’t want to be judged.
From day one, many have been pushing back on the shut down, ignoring protocols, defying the science, and looking for partners in their disregard and disrespect of a virus that has killed millions—young and old—worldwide. The arrogance, stubbornness. and denial are not strictly American traits, either.
This is a defining moment. Unfortunately, some are using it to test the strength of their influence. They may get mad that you’d rather exercise wisdom and caution; call you names, question your faith, bravery, and even friendship. There is patience and understanding that is required during this time that some people aren’t willing to offer, or don’t have—particularly those who could easily dupe and sway you prior to the pandemic.
This is not the time to be a people pleaser. It’s not the time to defy your instincts, or follow a fool. It’s not the time to succumb to manipulative tests of how much you care. Just because someone encourages reckless behavior doesn’t mean you have to comply. “No” has never been a more complete sentence than now.
Just as the virus made its way to America, so have its variants.
Imagine if state and local authorities were more vigilant about tracking and tracing. Imagine if they made public the results of every super spreader event. Who have people infected because they couldn’t keep still, couldn’t stop visiting and gathering, insisted on behaving as if COVID-19 was a fairy tale, or couldn’t be bothered to wear a mask?
Many perpetrators of continued spread will never know... or perhaps they do, but will never, ever tell.
Stay safe. Exercise good judgment, no matter who’s suggesting otherwise. It’s the least you can do.
