QUARANTINE LIFE: SIMPLER TIMES

Every hurricane makes me think of childhood summers in Louisiana.

I love that Google Maps lets you take a cyber tour down the roads on which you used to play, walk, run, and ride.

So many trees, and the sugar cane has been cleared away. The ditch looks filled in.

My grandmother’s house is gone; so are Mr. Oscar and Mr. Dennis’ houses, but the memories of playing softball with my cousins, riding in rickety bikes, eating figs and cherries right off of the trees, and Jax cookies from the grocery store, getting peppermint sticks and pecan candy from Miss Kate, popcorn balls, burning trash (with gasoline), hanging clothes on the line, stepping in ant beds, listening to WXOK, waiting for the train to clear the tracks...

This isn't their first bad weather rodeo, but I hope Louisiana is okay.
