MONDAY THOUGHTS

I was so tired. In heels…lugging CD’s… walking all over that convention center in Minneapolis with a rep who had no idea where I was supposed to be. In her defense, the place was humongous.

The late Mae Atterberry was working GMWA security. I didn’t see her, but she’d seen me circling past her post, looking lost, one too many times. “Hey Baby! I didn’t know you were here! What’s going on? Why are you wandering all over the place?”

She was a sight for sore eyes. I told her we were looking for the new artists’ event. “Well, what room is it in?

She was all ready to give us directions. The rep had no information to give her. Miss Mae was livid, shook her head, and told one of her associates to “watch the door”, because she had to “take care of one of my babies from DC”. There was a long bench. “Sit right here. Don’t go nowhere. I got this. I’ll be right back”.

She went into a large ballroom where a concert was taking place. She came back out, took my bag, walked me to the front of the room, and said, “Sit right here. I talked to “Mr. Clean”, Baby. He’s the MC, and he put you on the program. When the Japanese choir finishes singing, you’re next. “Mr. Clean” is gonna call you up, so don’t you go nowhere. I got to go back to my post, but he’ll take care of you.”

He did.
