QUARANTINE LIFE: POETRY PROMPT---UNNECESSARY COMPETITION

The superficial and the shallow

Are always up for grabs

The hustler and the opportunist

Fight to possess what others have

Whether position or affection

One wonders, “Why do they strive so—

Why always scheming, scrambling, clawing

For the contentment others know?

Their goal to be the greatest

In a kingdom where they’re named

Among the tolerated pests

Whose envy-fueled attempts to reign

Are often thwarted by their plans

Neither righteous, fair, nor pure

And undermined by their own actions

Underhanded; insecure

Discretion’s never named among them

They say the quiet parts out loud

And feign surprise when you expose

The motives, of which, they are proud

They’re good for tarnished reputations

Sowing discord; telling lies

Overlooking competence

Embracing what, most,  would despise

Ever angling to exclude what they eventually need

Crying foul when their own logic

Leaves them no choice but to concede

Don’t be discouraged; give it time

Though it seems so, they’ll never win

And when the latest drama backfires

Cue embarrassment again

Too busy sulking to conclude, no matter what they try to do

Frustration will be theirs, until they purpose to do right by you
