QUARANTINE LIFE: POETRY PROMPT---THE SWAMP

The swamp was drained, but the ones exposed

Assumed they were free to revert, I suppose,

To a time when bigotry reigned

With their ringleader gone, there's nowhere to hide;

No way to defend the hatred inside,

Now their reputation's stained

How proud they all are, as their venom flies

No compassion, remorse, nor care in their eyes

Until, of course, they are caught

And face the wrath of internet trolls

Whose dragging and doxxing of sin-sick souls

Has been elevated to an art

Awkward apologies; crocodile tears

Lies and excuses can't make up for years

Of arrogance, ignorance, and pride

And there's no comparing the hurt and pain

Of racial oppression to internet fame

And now, there's nowhere to hide

Some double down; some lawyer up

When their racist deeds come to light

Some show remorse (for the cameras, of course)

Self-awareness is nowhere in sight

What IS quite apparent, in each newly-crowned Karen

Is that bigotry’s still being taught

And until there’s a change

Conflict remains

Not the peace

For which so many fought
