QUARANTINE LIFE: SHELTER IN PLACE

The sudden changes left no time
To seek alternatives or find
A more suitable space
Rumors flew, and questions, too
Essential were a precious few
No one sure of what to do
Except shelter in place

It wasn't long before my mind
Could fight anxiety and find
Hope hadn't been erased
To look around, and know that I
Was most secure and safe inside
Not lavished, but quite satisfied
And could shelter in place

A new normal was evident
Guidelines emerged with the intent
To test, to track, and trace
While some chose to cooperate
Others would not capitulate
Argued their freedom was at stake
Should they shelter in place

Many thousands gone today
It didn't have to be that way
A horrible disgrace
The inequalities prevailed
If only things had been curtailed
If only systems hadn't failed
To plead, "Shelter in place."

As weeks turn into months, I find
In solitude I have resigned
In gratitude; with grace
I've no desire to return
To stressful busyness; I've learned
Accept this unexpected turn
Be wise
Shelter in place
