POETRY PROMPT: THE WATCHERS

The watchers, and their willing spies
Some lay back; some materialize
Some want to know--afraid to ask
Recruited for a nosy task

If you did need, they'd lend no hand
Contentment, they don't understand
If you did want, or dare reach out
You would be mocked, or talked about

To them, you should be broken; grieved
Struggling; desperate for reprieve
To them, you should have failed by now
They've watched so long, they don't know how
Their timetable has been dismissed
Their pronouncements?
Soundly dissed
Their opinions— cast aside
Their positions— pulverized
Their advice?
 Ignored and tossed
Their numbers?
 Deliberately lost

And now, frustration makes them bold
Pursuing truth of what they're told
In past times, secondhand would do
But now, they seek to talk to you
To find, if all of what they've heard
Is fact, fiction, or just absurd

And so, they call under the guise
Of great concern and caring (Lies!)

Their arrogance paints you gullible
Discernment makes you powerful
You easily read between their lines
Almost amusing, their designs
To find out what has never been
Business to which they should attend
But they've been put up to the task
By cowards--those dying to ask
And to those cowards, they report
Fanciful tales of every sort:
You have no food
You have no clothes
You’re on your last leg, they suppose
You will finally disclose
The suffering they hope to expose

But when no suffering can be found
No dark cloud looms; no pain abounds
Soon, will be the joyous day
When they'll tuck tail, and run away

The watchers are quick to believe
But when they find they've been deceived
By willing spies, with faces dual
Talebearers, who've run out of fuel
It's too hard to concede; confess
They've orchestrated one great mess
And what they've sowed, they'll surely reap
And fret about--
All while you sleep

The watchers, and their willing spies
Will soon learn where loyalty lies
It never lies among dogs who
Bring bones, and then
Transport them, too
