INDISPENSABLE

No one is indispensable
Though some have raised your bar
They're waiting ever patiently
To swoop in where you are
If there's a tiny opening--
Some way to get inside
Don't be surprised if you're the one
They'll quickly push aside

What they've got is never enough
They want what you have, too
Their lament is that you've got "too much"
They're "much better" than you
They'll find ways to discredit you
And criticize a bit
You've had a seat too long at tables
Where they want to sit

They'll make excuses for you
Assume great authority
To speak for you
Concerning your availability
"Oh, she can't do it, but I can!
Just take a chance with me!
I'll show you I'm more capable
Than she could ever be!"

You'll be surprised to find out
Who your adversary is
It's someone who has smiled, and cried
And schmoozed, and hugged, and kissed
Someone who's called you "Sister", "Friend"
But clueless, you are not
Business circles can be made up of
A most disloyal lot

Watch how someone treats others
It's a wise thing you must do
If they'll throw them under a bus
They'll also bulldoze you
Just do your best at every task
But never, ever think
That someone won't be standing by
Should you happen to blink

Just watch what happens if you, one day
Have to answer "No"
The memory of every "Yes"
Will disappear fo' sho
The memory of all the work;
The value that you bring
Will disappear as if your effort
Didn't mean a thing

So...
Don't think you're indispensable
It's simply isn't wise
'Cause somewhere, there's someone
You've not heard of--it's no surprise
They're quite adept at doing
Whatever it is that you do
And not inclined to care how you feel
When they replace you

Even if you find you've been replaced
Don't fret at all
Not everything is permanent
Some things are seasonal

Don't worry
What is yours will always find it's way to you
And when it does, be grateful for
The doors opened for you
And when you work, give it your all
If you can, have a blast!
Work as if, when all is done,
The task will be your last
